I spent my entire life perfecting the art of making myself small.
When you grow up starved of affection, survival becomes a reflex of appeasement. If someone cursed at me, I apologized for existing loudly enough to offend their ears. If someone shoved me, I steadied them so they wouldn't lose their footing. I was the girl who smiled through bruises and nodded until my neck ached, desperate for the barest scrap of approval.
The only complication was my mouth.
I don't know what god or demon took pity on my cowardice, but at some point during my lonely childhood, my words took on the weight…
