The night the hurricane made landfall, the emergency alert had barely stopped sounding when my sister-in-law, Brielle Rourke, called again.
I listened to her helpless sobbing, then calmly handed the phone to my husband, Caleb Rourke, who was busy boarding up the balcony doors.
Whatever she said, he kept agreeing to it. He pulled on a rain jacket and gave me that practiced, guilty look.
"Her window's broken, Lena. She's all alone over there. I'll patch it up and I'll be back before the worst of it hits, I promise."
Once again, it wasn't a discussion. It was an announcement.
