Four weeks before my due date, a colleague sent me a link to a morbid little novelty app called Posthumous.
It was designed as a simulation tool, allowing users to schedule automated, hyper-realistic voice calls that informed their emergency contacts of their untimely demise. It was meant to be dark humor—a test of who in your life would drop to their knees and who would simply check your insurance policy.
Sitting alone on the sofa of our brownstone, feeling the heavy, restless kicking beneath my ribs, I thought of Isaac. He was in Chicago for a three-day cardiovascular conference.
