I was born without an original setting. I am, by nature and by curse, a mirror.
When a boy in my preschool class had a stutter, I parroted him with such devout intensity that I nearly rewired my own vocal cords into a permanent stammer. Once, during a routine hospital visit, I watched an unconscious patient wheeled past with a ventilator tube down his throat; I dropped to my knees on the linoleum, clutching the ER doctor’s coat, hysterically begging him to intubate me too.
