The year my parents divorced, I was awarded to my wealthy mother, while my older sister was left with our unemployed father.
Mom lived in a sprawling, high-end apartment downtown, yet she strictly forbade me from touching the hot water. In the bitter chill of midwinter, she would tear the blankets off me at four in the morning.
"Your sister is out in the sticks, probably without running water. What makes you think you have the right to sleep in?"
I would haul two heavy plastic buckets, walking nearly two miles in the dark down to the riverbank.
