My husband had a condition he liked to call "decision paralysis."
Whenever he couldn't make up his mind, he would make me and my best friend, Alyssa, draw toothpicks. Short end makes the call.
When my daughter, Sophie, wanted to go to the beach for summer break, I drew the long end and Alyssa drew the short. So the whole family spent the weekend camping in the damp mountain air.
When Sophie’s stomach was acting up and I wanted to make her some warm broth, Alyssa drew the short end again. My three-year-old was forced to chew on charred, greasy barbecue.
