I spent months chasing Garrett.
Eventually, he grew so sick of me that he lied, claiming he was at a ski resort twelve hundred miles away in the snow-choked mountains of Montana.
I went. And the mountain gave way.
Trapped beneath the crush of the avalanche, barely breathing in the dark, my phone vibrated.
Garrett’s voice came through the speaker, sharp and mocking: "You actually went? You seriously couldn’t tell I was fucking with you?"
"So... you’re not here," I whispered, the air freezing on my lips as I forced the words out. "Thank God..."
Thank God you’re safe.
