To keep my sister from killing herself, my mother turned to an old parenting forum that preached a brutal philosophy: "Kill the chicken to scare the monkey."

The first time my older sister, Hannah, stood on the edge of the building’s flat roof, Mom didn’t plead with her. She didn’t cry. Instead, she grabbed me by the back of my collar and shoved me off the second-story fire escape landing below.
I remember the sickening crunch of my tibia snapping against the concrete, my limbs jerking in violent, involuntary spasms.
