Ten years ago, I gave up my five-thousand-dollar corporate scholarship so Shirley could stay in school.
When she tracked me down that night, I was unloading crates behind the campus dining hall in the dead of winter, my fingers so stiff and white with frostbite that I could barely feel the rough plastic handles.
"Why would you do that?" she cried, grabbing my hands and blowing frantic puffs of warm air into my palms. Her tears slipped free, hot and stinging against my chapped skin. "You needed that grant for tuition just as much as I did, Eli."
