He Begged Me to Disobey

When my sister, Irene, graduated and took a staff nursing job at the county hospital, she was pulling in nearly nine thousand dollars a month.

The first thing she did was drop seven hundred dollars on a top-of-the-line iPad for my schoolwork. When my father saw the box on the kitchen counter, his face turned the color of bruised meat. "What the hell are you throwing money at him for? You think cash grows on trees, wasting it on dead weight?"

In his mind, I was an afterthought—a boy who would eventually drift off, contribute nothing to his legacy, and wasn't worth a single red cent.
