In our family, we had an old mountain tradition: on the night a daughter got engaged, her father and brother were supposed to light the heirloom brass hurricane lantern and walk down to the edge of the property at the foot of the ridge to guide the prospective groom home.
The old folks used to say that as long as the flame didn’t go out, the daughter’s future would never be swallowed by the dark.
My sister and I were engaged on the exact same night.
As dusk settled into an inky black, Dad brought out the red-tinted brass lantern that had been in our family for three generations.
