The night I went into labor, my husband, Marco, got a desperate call from his adopted daughter, Livia.
She said someone was following her, that she was going to die.
Marco did not even look back. He pushed me into the family safe room and ordered every bodyguard to go with him.
"Elena, I'm locking the door to protect you. I'll take her to the doctor and come straight back."
I called to him through the door. I told him I was bleeding, that the baby might not wait for him.
Twelve hours later the safe room opened again.
I lived. My daughter Sofia did not.
