In the three years of our secret marriage, my wife, Maeve, never once used a gentle tone with me.
Then came the afternoon I walked past her home office and heard her speaking into the receiver, her voice dipped in a honeyed, aching tenderness:
"Just wait for me. It'll all be over soon."
When she hung up and caught me standing in the doorway, that warmth evaporated so fast it felt like a hallucination.
"Lurking in the hallway now?"
She crossed the room, caught my jaw between her thumb and forefinger, and pinched hard.
