Russell was a man who worshiped boundaries.
He didn’t like holding hands on the sidewalk.
He believed moving in together was the premature death of romance.
We had been together for one thousand five hundred days. We had explored every intimacy two bodies could share in the dark, yet I did not have a key to his apartment.
Whenever we spent the night together, he booked a room at a boutique hotel downtown. He always told me his apartment was his sanctuary, a sacred, private space that couldn't handle disruption.
I believed him. Until the night of our group dinner.
