The day we buried my mother, the sky broke open in a torrential downpour.
Gideon stood beside the headstone, his coat immaculate, utterly refusing to bow his head or kneel in the mud to pay his respects.
"It’s a Harrington rule," he’d whispered, his voice cold and dry despite the dampness in the air. "We only kneel before God and our own blood. Not to anyone else."
The whispers started immediately among the gathered relatives, sharp as the rain.
My father’s eyes were rimmed with red, his face flushing with embarrassment as he tried to smooth things over.
