I have always lived my life a beat behind. My childhood friend, Piper, and my best friend, Chase, were the opposite—always operating in fast-forward, breathless and impatient.
When we ate out, I’d barely be halfway through my meal before they’d already finished, clamoring to head to the arcade next door, leaving me alone at the table.
When we went swimming, my leg cramped up halfway across the lake. I cried out for help, only to look up and realize they had already dried off, packed up, and vanished.
