Abstract

In my family, there's only one rule—I always come first.

When I was ten years old, I pulled my brother Noah Fincher and sister Amanda Fincher, who are twins, from our burning house, leaving me with a permanently damaged leg.

To keep me from getting upset, Mom forces Amanda, the star ballerina, to give up dancing. Dad makes Noah work at a factory every school break to help pay for my medical expenses.

But as the years go by, the pain in my scarred joints only gets worse.

I ask Amanda if we can switch bedrooms so I can have her first-floor room.
