The year I ballooned to nearly two hundred pounds because of my illness, my classmates gave me a new name: "The Whale."
During gym class, halfway through the mile run, my legs gave out. I slammed onto the asphalt track, scraping my knees until they bled.
Above me, the bleachers erupted in a wave of cruel laughter. I could hear the distinct, metallic clicks of phone cameras recording.
When I finally managed to call my mother, sobbing into the receiver, she only had one thing to say:
"If you could just learn to control your mouth, you wouldn't be a laughingstock."
