In my eighteenth year at the orphanage, Director Harmon told me my birth parents had come looking for me, that they wanted to take me home. Full of hope, I rose up on my toes and looked out past the front gate. Empty. No one there. Director Harmon saw how flustered I was, cleared his throat softly, and tried to reassure me. "Don't read too much into it. Your parents are both busy with work, and the orphanage is so far out of the way. They didn't have time to come get you themselves, but I'm sure in their hearts they can't wait for you to come home."
