When the bouquet of anonymous crimson roses arrived at our door, my husband, David, was searing bone-in ribeyes in our open-concept kitchen, a glass of Napa Cabernet resting near his cutting board.
Tucked between the velvet petals was a heavy card with gold foil lettering: Congratulations on being chosen. Mrs. David Ross cordially requests your presence for high tea this Wednesday.
I assumed it was a bizarre, tasteless marketing stunt. I snapped a photo of the card and sent it to David’s phone.
