My mother is the most celebrated starry-sky painter in the City Art Coalition.
On my sister's tenth birthday, she spent all day on a ladder, painting a massive galaxy mural across her bedroom wall.
My sister pointed to the brightest star and said, "Mom, write my name on that one."
Mom smiled and repainted it three times until it was perfect.
I handed her the sketchbook I’d saved up for six months to buy, begging her to draw a little cat on the first page.
She didn't even look at it. She just pushed the pencil back to me.
"Use the copier," she said. "It looks exactly the same."
