"The night Alaric Vale proposed to me, my younger sister, Rosalie Mercer, slit her wrists.
Mom took her to Switzerland for treatment. A month later, word came that they had both died in a car accident.
Alaric went to identify the bodies. The ferry he took was caught in a storm, and he was lost at sea.
