My mother used to say there was a scale in our house, with me on one side and my sister on the other.
Mine was always the heavier side—or rather, the side that dragged downward. Mother called it proof of my greed, a sign of my innate selfishness, and insisted it had to be corrected.
But from the time I was six, if I ate one more slice of apple than my sister, my knuckles were rapped with a wooden ruler. She called it greed.
If I scored higher on a test than Bree, my mother would corner me against the hallway wall, her face cold. "Did you cheat?"
