Abstract

The afternoon I came home from college, my father stood over the stove and whipped up a welcome-home plate of mashed potatoes and country gravy.

By midnight, I was burning with a fever so high the bedroom walls seemed to buckle. My stomach violently purged everything I had in me. My father hovered by my bedside, clucking with worry, spooning liquid ibuprofen into my mouth and refusing to leave my side—right up until the paramedics carried me out on a stretcher, and I was wheeled straight into the ICU.
