Never Truly Her Husband

My wife of three secret years threw a lavish welcome-back party for her childhood sweetheart the night he returned from London.

Halfway through the evening, a sharp-eyed colleague caught the glimmer of platinum on her left ring finger and teased, "Look at that rock! Don’t tell us you’re finally tying the knot, Ms. Walter?"

Caroline didn't brush it off. Instead, she turned to Brett Dawson, trading a soft, conspiratorial smile with him across the candlelit table.

Then, loud enough for the entire private dining room to hear, she announced, "You caught us. Brett and I are getting engaged."
