The first time we were stranded on Mount Rainier’s icy slopes, Jamie ignored my bleeding leg and clipped the only harness to Luna. “She fears heights,” he said, avoiding my gaze. “You’re stronger.” The second time, a mudslide hit, and he gave her the lone oxygen mask. His teammate excused it, citing her weak lungs. Time and again, he left the safest path to her, assuming I’d endure.
During the ninth crisis, a mine collapsed, trapping us in separate tunnels. Dispatch demanded a choice. “Save Luna first,” he said instantly. Over the radio, I asked, “And me?” His tone softened, practiced.
