Abstract

My parents used to run a one-dollar cancer kitchen right behind the back gate of Memorial Oncology.

It cost a single dollar to use a stove burner for an hour. Rice, flour, cooking oil, and salt were free for anyone who needed them.

They paid the rent, electricity, and gas out of their own pockets, bleeding my mother’s monthly pension dry to keep the burners lit.

I tried to reason with them. I begged them to stop.

My mom would just look at me and say, "Lauren, by the time people end up at this hospital, they’ve already lost everything else.
