Past the Breaking Point

The day my dad was admitted to the hospital, my fiancé gave the cot I had reserved for myself to his childhood best friend.

A text notification popped up on my phone confirming the refund for the cot rental just as I was in the hallway buying oatmeal for my dad.

The nurse said:

"Only one overnight guest is allowed per patient. Mr. Sterling just changed the name on the reservation."

I rushed back to the room. Liam Sterling was making the bed for his childhood friend, Chloe.

She looked up, her eyes red.
