I snuck up to the surface during the Great Cleansing, the one night a year when the iron gates of the Pit creak wide and the dead are allowed to drift.
I just wanted to see the stars again.
Instead, right at the threshold of the lower crossing, I slammed into the two people who were supposed to be basking in the golden pastures of Paradise: my parents.
They were blocking the archway, flanking my adopted sister, Cassidy. And the second my father saw me, he held out a palm calloused by greed and barked, "Give Cassidy your Soul Pass."
"Not on your life," I said, instinctively stepping back.
