When I was nine years old, my older brother, Garrett, assaulted our upstairs neighbor.
The night the police led him out in handcuffs, the entire apartment complex gathered in the stairwells and balconies to watch the spectacle. Some people spat and called him an animal. Others whispered into the dark, wondering aloud what the girl had done to invite it—after all, why would a quiet boy like Garrett fixate on her if she hadn't given him some kind of signal?
Nora never survived those whispers. Three months later, she walked up to the rooftop of the county hospital and jumped.
