My twin sister and I were born with identical dark, irregular birthmarks.
Mine was on my right cheek, a stark, ink-spill patch that drew stares and cruel nicknames from the moment I started school. My sister Norah’s was on her calf—easily hidden under a pair of jeans, invisible to the world unless she chose to wear a skirt.
Our parents couldn’t afford the laser removal surgeries. I remember them sitting us down when we were ten, their eyes rimmed red with exhaustion, telling us we couldn’t be a burden on the family budget.
