My mother always despised weakness. She thought I was too soft, too pampered, so she traded me away on a televised reality show about troubled teens swapping lives.
When the five-year nightmare finally ended and I was brought back to the city, the very first thing she did was point to the Steinway grand piano in the parlor.
"Can you play?" she asked.
I stared at her, hollow and bewildered, and shook my head.
Her palm cracked across my face with brutal force.
"You both went through the exact same program," she snarled.
