When I opened my eyes in the hospital bed after the accident, the first thing I did was pretend I had amnesia. I wanted to see the panic on Megan’s face. I wanted to hear her voice soften, to watch her rush to my side and remind me of who we were.
So I stared at her blankly and asked, "Who are you?"
Megan didn't run to call the doctor.
She didn't lean in to take my hand or tell me she was my girlfriend.
Instead, she took an instinctive step backward, putting clean, deliberate distance between us.
