My younger brother always claimed he had an invisible master.
Ever since we were boys, the script never varied: he would dissolve into breathless, shivering sobs, look up with those wide, dewy eyes, and whisper that "the system" had assigned him another quest. A mandate from some higher plane, impossible to refuse.
Whenever that word left his lips, I was expected to fold. My prize-winning model kits, my bedroom with the southern sun, my hard-earned savings—everything I had was offered up on an altar to keep him from breaking.
