The day of my final background verification for the London transfer, the clerk called me into a small, windowless office. She stared at me across the desk, her expression tight.
"Naomi, why didn't you disclose your marriage and child?"
I froze. The fluorescent light hummed overhead, suddenly too loud.
"I'm sorry?" I asked, assuming I’d misheard. "I’m twenty-eight. I’m single. I’ve never been married, and I certainly don't have a child."
The clerk didn't look convinced. She turned her computer monitor toward me, tapping a manicured finger against the glass.
