The day my seven-year-old sister was diagnosed autistic, Mom sat unmoving until dusk. Next morning, I stuck my foot out for her to tie my sneaker, as usual. Dad yanked me back. "Can't you see she's upset? Tie them yourself!"
Mom watched with red eyes, then pulled my sister close, murmuring comfort. My shoelace snapped, whipping my hand raw. After that, my sister screamed nightly until her voice rasped. Mom paced the living room holding her, while I hid under my blanket, counting to four hundred with no sleep.
