The afternoon the oncologist handed me my death sentence, I drove straight to the cemetery to buy my own grave.
I had my card out on the counter when the cemetery coordinator offered me a pained, rehearsed grimace. The plot I wanted—Plot 42 on the eastern crest—had been reserved twenty minutes earlier. The buyer was securing it for my brother Elliott’s golden retriever, Teddy, who had died of renal failure the night before.
I stood there, looking out the panoramic window at the ridge. It was high, tucked against the slope, catching the first amber break of dawn. It felt peaceful, dignified.
