My sister died when she was four years old.
On the day of her cremation, I was the one who held the small, heavy mahogany box containing her ashes. I was the one who walked it to the niche in the columbarium, feeling the cold marble through my palms. I was fifteen then, and I thought that was the hardest thing I’d ever have to do for her.
I was wrong.
Twenty-five years later, a process server knocked on my door and handed me a court summons.
In the column for the Defendant, typed in cold, serif font, was my sister’s name: Lily Miller. The claim? An outstanding debt of two million dollars.
