Simon lost his hearing to meningitis when he was three. I started learning American Sign Language the fall of our junior year in high school, and for five years, my hands belonged to him.
I went to every IEP meeting, sat beside him through every college admissions interview, and stood next to his hospital beds during ear infections and audiogram checkups. I spent months drilling for the National Interpreter Certification, committing more than three thousand technical medical and legal signs to muscle memory, all so Simon would never find himself stranded on the wrong side of a room.
