To mark our thousandth day together, I wrote Benjamin a love song for the senior graduation gala. The first letters of each chorus line spelled a hidden message. Benjamin and Chloe, together forever.
Eager to rehearse, I went to the music room and stopped outside the half-open door. Benjamin held my best friend Nika in his arms, teaching her my song. His eyes held a tenderness I had never seen directed at me. This song only has soul if you sing it, he whispered.
Soon the setlist changed. Nika became the lead singer, and her name replaced mine as songwriter.
