I have always had an almost debilitating capacity for empathy.
I don't just notice emotions; I absorb them. With Bennett, nothing was ever hidden from me. When he first asked me to be his girlfriend on that rain-slicked brownstone stoop in Boston, the sheer, wild euphoria radiating from him made my own ribs ache with joy. When I came down with a vicious fever, his distress was so acute and physical that I could feel the knot of nausea in his throat as if it were lodged in mine.
