My bedroom was a glass box with four transparent walls and twenty-four-hour surveillance.
When I was twelve, I snuck out to the neighborhood park. Sam, my younger brother, followed me. Less than five hundred yards from our front gate, he was taken by human traffickers.
The very next morning, my father nailed my bedroom windows shut and rigged every corner of the house with motion-tracking cameras.
My mother held me that night, weeping until her shirt was soaked through.
"Eli," she sobbed into my hair, "we already lost one son. We can't lose you too."
