After Gwen was laid off, Owen took some annual leave to accompany her to the coast to clear her head. To keep me from overthinking, he casually dragged me along too.
The three of us went beachcombing on the rocky shore. Gwen suggested a contest to see who could gather the most shells and crabs. I fell for it, carrying my little plastic bucket deep into the jagged reef.
The tide rushed in fast. Waves rolled up, layer by layer, and a sudden, sharp pain shot through the sole of my foot. A piece of discarded broken glass had sliced right into my heel.
"Owen, help me! I'm hurt!"
