Abstract

Ever since my wife, Serena, brought her old flame, Brett, back from overseas and installed him as the estate manager with absolute authority over our lives, my reality had been hollowed out.

On paper, I was the husband of one of the wealthiest women in the city. In reality, Brett allotted me an allowance of ten dollars a day for groceries. If I needed to buy a winter coat or replace a pair of worn-out sneakers, I had to submit a five-thousand-word formal requisition to Brett, handwritten.

Then came the afternoon our six-year-old daughter, Annabelle, was hit by a car.
