Seven days before our wedding, Brett started sending out early autumn gifts.
To Candice, his childhood friend, he sent overnighted, air-freighted Japanese white jewel strawberries—the kind nestled in individual silk-lined wooden boxes.
To me, he brought home two crates of clearance apples from the discount supermarket, buy-one-get-one-free.
"Candice has a delicate palate," he explained, barely looking up from his phone as he set the bruised cardboard box on our kitchen island. "She only eats imported. Besides, you’ve never been picky, and apples are good for you."
