My wife skipped our three-year-old son’s retinal detachment surgery so she could hold her former flame’s hand during a routine outpatient follow-up.
That evening, while packing our son’s diaper bag in the quiet of the pediatric ward, I picked up his voice-recording teddy bear and pressed the stitched paw. Out came a tiny, raspy whisper.
“Teddy… Mommy isn’t here anymore. Can you be my mommy instead?”
At his community follow-up clinic a week later, the pediatrician casually asked why his mother hadn’t come.
