Four years of long-distance. I finally bought a ring and booked a flight to Chicago to propose to Matthew.
Before the plane touched down, he sent me a text.
"Emergency surgery tonight. Might be off the grid for a bit."
I didn’t tell him I had landed. I wanted to surprise him at Chicago Memorial, to show up at his locker with the ring.
But a sudden, crippling bout of acute gastroenteritis hit me the moment I stepped into the terminal, and my best friend, Rachel, had to rush me straight into the emergency room instead.
