Thomas was the bridge between Lauren and me. I’d known him for three years before I ever met her.
After Lauren and I broke up, Thomas was caught in the middle, entirely unsure of which side to take.
Neither of us was willing to let go of him. On holidays, we would both reach out to him separately, and on birthdays, we’d use him as a proxy to pass along wishes. Neither of us wanted to be the first to say it out loud: "We are two parallel lines now, and we’ll never cross again."
Lauren finally broke the stalemate on a completely ordinary Tuesday night. Her text was brief:
