Chapter 4

No sooner had I finished speaking than Simon announced it, just as I'd told him to.

By the time Jeanette stormed into the ward with her daughter,

I was telling Althea that she had to bravely fight for what she wanted.

"It's all my fault... your mother and I raised you to be too sensible from a young age, so you never learned to fight for anything."

"You have to remember, once your father dies, this family is yours, and no one can take it away."

Simon hesitated a long while, then spoke up quietly from the side.

"Mom, the way you're talking... you can't really give Jeanette and the rest of them nothing at all, can you?"

"After all, she's been with me for several years!"

"And by law, a spouse is entitled to a share of my property too!"

I snapped at him, exasperated.

"So you do know it's only a share, not the whole thing!"

"You couldn't find anyone as stupid as you if you went looking with a lantern!"

I was on a roll with my scolding.

The ward door was suddenly kicked open.

Jeanette clacked in on her high heels and rushed straight at Simon, hitting him.

"You dog of a man! You were the one who begged me to marry you! You promised you'd be good to Hailey too!"

"And now you're going back on your word!"

"If you want a divorce, just say so!"

My eyes lit up, and I seized on her words at once.

"A divorce is great! I'm all for a divorce!"

Jeanette was a cunning, vicious woman. Once I was gone, who knew how she'd bully Althea.

Better to settle it once and for all and have her divorce Simon!

But I had underestimated Simon's feelings for her.

The moment he heard the word "divorce," his face went as panicked as if he owed tens of millions. He threw his arms around Jeanette and shouted,

"I won't divorce her!"

He turned to look at me, his eyes full of reproach.

"Mom! It wasn't until I met Jeanette that I understood what true love really is!"

"I have no objection to Althea inheriting the company, but if you're asking me to divorce, absolutely not!"

I looked at him standing there with tears in his eyes.

And I regretted ever choosing such a man back in the day.

I must have been blind.

Held in his arms, Jeanette shot me a smug, malicious smile.

Then her eyes rolled back and she fainted.

Before long, the doctor said she was three months pregnant and mustn't be upset during this time.

Jeanette leaned against Simon's chest, her smile both frail and triumphant.

"Mom, I'm carrying your grandson in here. Don't just dote on your granddaughter and neglect your grandson!"

I gave a cold snort and rolled my eyes.

"You look like a grandson to me!"

I'd made Simon and Jeanette both storm off in a huff.

For several days after that, Jeanette tried every trick to get Simon to agree to change the company's heir back to Hailey.

But as long as I wouldn't budge, Simon had no way to get the company's shareholders to agree to Jeanette's demands.

Just as I was preparing to be discharged and give Jeanette and her daughter a proper reckoning,

she came to the hospital to see me, belly out, bringing along someone dressed in a Taoist robe.

"Master, take a look, this is my mother-in-law!"

"I asked Simon about it, and he said her personality changed completely after she woke up. Could she have been possessed by some evil spirit?"

I narrowed my eyes.

I didn't even need to think to know what Jeanette was scheming. I was just about to speak

when I saw the so-called master squint at me for a moment, his expression turning grave.

"Something's definitely off! If I'm not mistaken, this is a case of body-possession!"

Jeanette shrieked and immediately ran into Simon's arms, staring at me in fear.

Althea's face went red with anger. She stood up to speak up for me, but I held her down firmly.

"Don't be in such a hurry, Althea."

"There's no point arguing with an idiot like that."

As I said it, I simply pulled out my phone and called the police.

"Hello, I'd like to report someone at this hospital carrying out feudal superstitious activities!"
