CH. 01
Chapter 1
Before the Visconti family's truce banquet began, only two seats remained empty at the long table.
One was at the far end. The other was to the left of Lucas Visconti, the man I'd married under contract.
Three months earlier, to settle a blood debt hanging over my father, I'd signed a marriage contract and become the secret wife of the youngest Mafia boss in New York.
According to the seating chart approved and sealed by both families' consiglieri, Sophia Vitali, their negotiator, was supposed to sit at the far end.
The list hadn't been changed, but the place cards on the table had been swapped.
I had just started toward Lucas when he looked up.
"Sophia, take this seat."
The banquet hall fell silent.
Enzo, the Vitali family's consigliere, stiffened.
"Is this a gesture of goodwill, or are we to understand that Sophia is now under your personal protection?"
Adrian, Lucas's consigliere, spoke under his breath. "Boss, the official seating chart hasn't been amended. We can still fix this."
Roman Hayes, the underboss, also stopped the estate manager from setting out any more silverware.
But Lucas overruled the objections.
Sophia's brother Dominic had taken a bullet for Lucas six years ago and died of his wounds three days later.
"She's here for the negotiations. I take full responsibility."
Enzo demanded that the incident be entered into the truce minutes and reserved the right to suspend the talks.
Lucas didn't back down.
Throughout dinner, he fielded every toast meant for Sophia, using the negotiations as his excuse.
When a waiter knocked over a champagne flute and broken glass sliced my wrist, he didn't even turn around.
I slipped off the obsidian ring reserved for the Visconti inner circle and set it on the table.
Adrian and Roman's expressions changed in unison.
Lucas had forgotten the one thing that mattered: the secret wife he'd kept in the shadows was the only person who could unlock every dark secret of both families.
Chapter 1
I left the banquet hall. Lucas followed me into the wine cellar moments later.
"You know what's at stake tonight.
"Taking off that ring in public will embarrass the family."
I held up my bleeding wrist.
"So that's all you see? The family's embarrassment?"
Only then did he frown.
"Who did that?"
"Sophia matters. The truce matters. Both families' reputations matter. I'm the only one who doesn't."
"There's a reason she's sitting there."
"So you just gave away my seat?"
Sophia walked in carrying a first-aid kit.
"The old guard trusts only me. I moved closer to the head of the table to keep the truce alive."
I pulled away from her hand.
"Your authority as a negotiator doesn't let you bypass both consiglieri.
"The moment you sit beside Lucas and he defends you, everyone at that table sees you as being under his personal protection.
"And if he throws you out, you can take that humiliation back to the hawks and use it to kill the truce."
Lucas still defended her.
"She wasn't trying to target you."
The official list sealed by both sides had never been changed.
Sophia had gone around the Vitali records team and privately asked the estate manager to switch the place cards.
Lucas knew the request hadn't gone through Enzo or Adrian, and still approved it himself.
"Maybe she didn't mean to. What about you?"
Lucas fell silent.
"You knew mine was the only seat left, and you still made the decision for me because you were sure I'd give in."
"Four days. Once the truce is signed, I'll deal with this."
"You're making me wait again?"
I pushed the ring toward him.
"In four days, I'll perform my last public duty to this family.
"Once the signing is over, I'm ending our family contract."
Lucas's voice turned cold.
"Are you threatening me?"
"I'm telling you."
"I've waited three months for you to choose me. This is the last time I'll ever wait."
After the banquet, Adrian, Roman, and North District capo Carlo Rizzo summoned Lucas to a meeting.
A few days later, I read the minutes of that meeting in the accountability report Adrian had filed with the council.
"That wasn't just a chair you gave away. It was the seat reserved for the woman at the head of this family."
The Vitali hawks were already using the incident to question the Viscontis' commitment to the truce, while people inside the family had begun to wonder whether their boss could protect his own.
Lucas said only that he would publicly acknowledge our marriage after the truce was signed.
Adrian asked, "Are you protecting the truce, or are you still trying to repay Dominic for saving your life?"
Lucas didn't answer.
The minutes noted that before the meeting ended, Lucas placed the ring I'd left behind beside Dominic's old service medal.
He had opened the draft marriage announcement several times, but he'd never hit Send.
He wasn't unaware that the two were in conflict.
He simply chose, once again, to make me wait.
Back in the west wing, I discovered that my port clearance had been suspended.
The order carried a legacy admin credential that former consigliere Marcello Bianchi had secretly retained.
That legacy credential couldn't open lower-level security gates or alter independent records. It could only make a forged order look legitimate enough to fool the estate manager and rank-and-file guards who relied on manual checks.
Someone had already smuggled a backdoor into the estate's systems.
I secured my passport and the ledger, contacted an independent captain, and booked passage on a ship leaving the night of the truce signing.
In four days, I would fulfill my obligation and leave with my father.
Chapter 2
The next morning at breakfast, Lucas pushed a restored travel pass across the table to me.
The obsidian ring sat beside it.
"Security had no authority to restrict your movements. The order has been rescinded.
"No one gets to restrict Mrs. Visconti's movements."
I didn't touch the ring.
"And that's supposed to erase the fact that you let someone take my place last night?"
"Evelyn."
It was the first time he'd ever said my name.
I took the travel pass.
"Thank you, Mr. Visconti."
His fingers tightened, but he couldn't order me to put the ring back on.
After breakfast, he took me through an underground passage connecting the armory, the garage, and the private dock.
"This corridor was renovated for you three months ago.
"You don't like strangers getting close."
Three months earlier, men had come to collect a blood debt from my father, Daniel Carter.
Lucas arranged my father's surgery first. Then he presented the marriage contract.
He said I could refuse, but after I signed, he made every decision about where I lived, my security detail, and my schedule.
My father had told me then about a clinic in the neutral zone that answered to no family.
Years earlier, he'd helped the clinic purchase equipment and paid for Dr. Elena Brooks's medical training.
Lucas didn't know about that connection.
I stopped outside the armory.
"You said the contract wouldn't restrict my freedom. Why did you give my seat to Sophia?"
"Her brother saved my life.
"The hawks are targeting her. If the talks fail, she'll lose everything."
"So you publicly sacrificed my position?"
Lucas produced the truce agreement.
"After the signing, I'll make the marriage public."
"And before that?"
He didn't answer.
Sophia's encrypted call came through at that exact moment.
She claimed the hawks had detained her in the old city.
Adrian warned that the distress call hadn't gone through official Vitali channels and was very likely a trap.
Lucas had already opened the draft marriage announcement.
When the location came through, he closed the draft and left with his men anyway.
"Wait for me."
Just hours earlier, he had admitted he shouldn't have sacrificed my position.
One phone call from Sophia, and he left me behind again.
Before dawn, the convoy returned to the estate.
Sophia's gown was immaculate. Not a scratch on her.
The so-called kidnapping had only been the hawks stopping her car.
An hour later, she walked into my study carrying documents.
The west wing was off-limits to guests.
She'd used Marcello's legacy credential to forge emergency authorization from the boss and bypass the estate manager's two-person verification.
She hadn't cracked the lock.
The people who trusted the forged paperwork had opened the door for her.
Sophia placed a debt investigation request on the desk.
The request was dated seven days before the marriage contract. Its stated objective was a single line:
Determine how to secure the cooperation of Evelyn Carter, the ledger decryption specialist.
"Lucas didn't marry you just to repay a blood debt.
"He needed to keep you close so you could uncover the transaction records for him."
I held the document down.
"And that's your reason for breaking into the west wing?"
She paused at the doorway and looked back at me.
"The next time I call for help, are you still willing to bet on who Lucas will choose?"
After the door closed, I pulled up the visitor log.
It was the second time someone had used the legacy credential to manufacture the appearance of lawful authority.
Sophia had brought the request on purpose. She wanted to scare me into fleeing to the docks ahead of schedule.
If the hawks abducted me there, the Viscontis would be blamed for failing to protect one of their own, and the truce would collapse.
I canceled the original booking and switched to a different route.
Since she expected me to walk into her trap, I would change the timing first.
Chapter 3
"Ms. Carter, the Viscontis have blacklisted you."
The captain handed me the lockdown order.
The order barred me from leaving New York. Anyone who assisted would be treated as a threat to the truce.
The signatory was Lucas.
I later learned that Adrian had placed three things in front of Lucas at once: photos of the dock ambush, an alternate route, and an escort plan awaiting my approval.
Lucas had walked to the west wing door with the confirmation in hand but never knocked.
After surveillance captured hawk vehicles entering the dock, he tore up the confirmation and signed the full lockdown order.
The danger was real.
But he knew he could have asked me first and still chose to decide for me.
By the time I returned to the estate, both families' consiglieri were conducting a pre-hearing evidence review.
Carlo was the first to go on the offensive.
"You gave a rival envoy the seat reserved for your wife, then locked down her movements. People are already asking whether the Viscontis can protect their own."
The port capo shot back, "The hawks were waiting at the docks. Letting her leave would have been a death sentence."
Roman slammed the ambush photos onto the table.
"You can warn her. You can provide an escort. But the choice should belong to her."
Lucas didn't rescind the order.
Sophia then submitted an evacuation route map.
"Evelyn, why did you leak the route?"
I scanned the chart.
"This uses the old Vitali format. My father never used it."
After Adrian verified the format, he struck the route map from evidence.
Sophia turned to Lucas, her eyes rimmed red.
"She's just jealous of me.
"If she admits she was wrong, I'll speak for her. I'll even make sure her father stays protected."
"You forged evidence, and you want me to confess?"
I demanded the records of her seat swap, her contact with the estate manager, and her entry into the west wing be retrieved.
Enzo didn't defend her. He only instructed the clerk to enter the challenge into the minutes.
The neutral observer also declared that until the evidence was verified, no family could restrict my freedom.
After the pre-hearing, Enzo took Sophia away.
I asked Adrian, "What are the Vitalis formally asking for?"
"Only that the route map be flagged for review and kept out of the main truce agreement."
"Do I need to withdraw my accusation?"
"No. And you don't need to apologize to Sophia."
But Lucas said, "Before the signing, you need to publicly retract your claim that she forged evidence."
Adrian objected on the spot.
"Boss, that's not a condition the Vitali family proposed."
I looked at Lucas.
"The route map has already been thrown out. The seating change and the west wing access are both compromised.
"You're not preserving the truce. You're preserving her dignity."
“Ask me to take back the truth if you want. But don't pretend she never forged it—not when you've never once asked how it felt to stand accused by the woman who stole my seat.”
"The investigation takes time."
"So the cost still falls on me."
Carlo and Adrian both demanded he reverse the decision. Lucas wouldn't budge.
"When the truce is complete, I'll dissolve the marriage contract."
Lucas immediately signed a protection order.
"Evelyn is to enter the northern secure zone. All outside communication is suspended."
"What about my father?"
"He's already been moved to a safe house."
"I want to see him."
"After the investigation.
"Only if you cooperate will he continue to receive protection."
Adrian didn't execute the order immediately.
He stamped "Pending Review" beside the indefinite communications blackout, demanded a capo council meeting within six hours, and added an independent medical oversight clause.
Roman also warned that the safe house was switching chains of command and that medication approvals could stall.
Lucas only glanced at the time.
"Our doctor will suffice.
"There won't be any problems."
Six hours later, the capo council kept the temporary security measures but struck down the indefinite blackout. It also mandated that all external documents be witnessed by neutral personnel.
Lucas still pushed independent medical oversight off until after the truce.
He had ordered house arrest. He had never told anyone to withhold medication.
But by funneling medical decisions through layers of approval and refusing independent oversight, he had left a gap for someone else to exploit.
My father had designed the offline disaster response systems for the safe houses and the old port years ago.
Lucas could revoke everyday access, but he couldn't remotely deactivate the hardware-level maintenance codes burned into on-site equipment without shutting down every safe house and replacing each controller one by one.
The one-time response codes I held couldn't unlock doors remotely, but they could access alarm logs, shift-change records, and the medical terminal.
That night, I logged into the read-only account my father had left behind.
Lucas had sealed my door.
But my father's escape route was still in my hands.
Chapter 4
The following afternoon, a process server carrying neutral-zone credentials entered the secure area.
The attached waiver demanded that I permanently surrender my rights to port access, medical care, security, and residence, then remain at the estate indefinitely to decrypt the ledger.
"Is this what Lucas wants?"
Sophia appeared on the video feed. "This is the price of the truce."
"I want to see my father."
"That's not on the agenda."
"Then I won't sign."
Sophia stared at me.
"The longer you drag this out, the more likely your father's medical care is to suffer."
"What you want isn't a truce. It's to strip me of every protection I have."
She cut the feed.
Dr. Elena Brooks was the one assigned to review the medical records that night.
My father had funded her training years ago, and she still retained audit access through the clinic's legacy system.
She pulled the diagnostics from the incident snapshot.
My father had suffered acute myocardial ischemia. His medication had been delayed by nine minutes.
The protection order Lucas had signed forced every medication approval through the full chain of command, yet it provided no independent review.
During the chain-of-command transition, Sophia's people had changed the status from "pending confirmation" to "delivered."
Lucas hadn't ordered the nine-minute delay.
But the gap was one he had left, and both Adrian and Roman had warned him about it.
Before the signing ceremony, Lucas came in carrying a different document.
"The actual restrictions last only thirty days and don't affect medical care, communication, or travel. No one can force you to decrypt the ledger, either."
I laid both documents side by side.
"Then what was this one I received?"
He opened the forged document, and his expression hardened.
Adrian retrieved the original attachment preserved by the council.
The real terms required only that I temporarily withdraw from political activity conducted under my cover identity as a Visconti witness.
Adrian called for the truce to be suspended pending investigations into document tampering and the medical incident.
Lucas agreed only to void the forged document.
I handed him my father's diagnostic report.
He ordered the safe house supervisor detained, then turned to me. "The doctors have stabilized him."
"After the signing, I'll let you see him."
"Will you publicly acknowledge me as your wife?"
"If we go public now, the hawks will end the truce."
"So you still choose the truce."
Lucas didn't answer.
"It's not that you don't understand.
"You just assume I'll keep waiting."
In the council chamber, the real attachment was placed before me again.
It didn't imprison me, but it still required me to suspend the witness identity I had been using to conceal the marriage.
Milder terms did not make them respectful.
Lucas knew that, and he still hadn't asked for the attachment to be withdrawn.
Sophia was waiting for me to sign, and he didn't stop her.
I put pen to paper, but what I wrote was a string of port transaction numbers.
"I request an emergency council review of this account."
The clerk verified the numbers and stood up immediately.
"The money came through a pharmaceutical shipping route controlled by the Vitali hawks."
Sophia lunged for the document but was restrained by the guards.
"This doesn't prove I'm guilty!"
"No. But it's enough to freeze the account and open an investigation."
The hawk representatives were suspended from voting. Enzo agreed on the spot to separate the attachment from the main agreement.
I hadn't signed. The restrictions didn't take effect. The main truce agreement moved forward.
Elena brought me the emergency medical transfer permit.
"The medication delay has triggered a neutral medical review. The safe house has to release him."
I left through the side door and climbed into the medical transport.
The safe house gate was still stuck on "pending confirmation."
A technician connected to the local port. Using the maintenance parameters my father had left behind, I generated a one-time response that opened only the medical evacuation corridor.
My father sat weakly in the room.
"Evelyn, how did you get here?"
I helped him up.
"I'm taking you out."
Once the medical transport entered the neutral zone, I erased my estate credentials and requested permanent revocation of my personal access.
By the time Lucas arrived, the room was empty.
All that remained on the table were the tampered medication records and a copy of the family contract.
This time, I didn't wait for him.
